Pet Passport Travel Scheme
The Pet Travel Scheme
(or PETS for short) , allows cats and dogs to re-enter the UK without quarantine..
Pet Passports are an official certificate for pet travel that can be obtained by following the guidelines set out below . For the latest information on obtaining a Pet Passport and using the Pet travel scheme then please visit the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website.
Passport for Pets requirements.
1. Get your pet fitted with a microchip at your local veterinary surgery.
2. After the microchip has been fitted your pet must be vaccinated against rabies and then a blood test will be performed to check the level of protection against rabies. There is a 6 month waiting period between the rabies vaccination and blood test. So be sure to plan ahead if you wish to obtain a Pet Passport before your holiday.
3. Obtain the official PETS certificate.
4. Your pet must be treated against ticks & tapeworm 24-48 hours before you re-enter the UK and issued with an official certificate of treatment.
5. Be sure to pre book your travel and advise in plenty of time of your intention to travel with an animal. Most ferry operators allow animals to travel with a Pet Passport under the Pet Travel Scheme.
You should budget approximately £150 when you apply for a pet passport.

are you sure the sentence above “There is a 6 month waiting period between the rabies vaccination and blood test” is correct? I thought the blood test could be taken about 4 weeks after the vaccination, and then there is a 6 month waiting period between a successful blood test (i.e. one showing the right level of antibodies)and being able to bring the pet into the UK.
